NON-FORMULARY PRESCRIPTIONS IF A PRESCRIPTION IS NOT ON THE VA's AUTHORIZED FORMULARY LIST AND YOUR DOCTOR INSISTS YOU, THE VETERAN, MUST HAVE THAT PRESCRIPTION ANYWAY - The doctor must call the Outpatient Pharmacy and ask for the protocol for medications not listed on the VA's approved formulary and what procedure they need to follow so that the veteran will be able to obtain the non-formulary prescription so it can be filled through the VA pharmacy |
(313) 576-1000 Ask For The Operator. The doctor would then ask the person who answers that they want to speak to someone in the "outpatient pharmacy". Once the doctor is transferred to the Outpatient Pharmacy, the doctor lets them know he/she wants the VA to issue a non-formulary prescription. They must ask exactly what they must do in order to have the VA issue the non-formulary prescription (which also ensures the VA will stock it so the veteran can continue to receive refills too). |
